Bamboo Fencing Ideas for Your Backyard

A great way to take advantage of the benefits of bamboo is by installing bamboo fencing in your yard. Whether you need security from intruders or protection for your garden, bamboo fences are the way to go. They are extremely durable in different climates, water resistant, and low maintenance. The naturally occurring silica is a termite barrier free from chemicals, while the fences themselves are much less expensive than other fence varieties. Depending on the style of fence, they can even last up to twenty years.

1.  Split Cane Bamboo
This style of bamboo fencing is especially good for temperate climates because it is lightweight and strong. Bamboo posts are connected on the top and bottom with steel wires for structure and with coated wires in the middle for flexibility. You can use the naturally tan bamboo or dye it a variety of colors. Some of the darker colors such as black and mahogany tend to fade in the sunlight, but luckily when they fade they take on an authentic and rustic style.

2.  Dense Weave
These attractive fence styles are a little more elaborate than the bamboo posts, as they are created with reeds of bamboo. The reeds are woven into panels to form a single, uniform piece that can be placed around the perimeter of your yard or simply around vegetables or flowers.

3.  Bamboo Wing Fence
A bamboo wing fence is more for decoration than anything else, though they are often used to shade an area of the yard as well. These ornamental designs are very popular in Japanese culture, and make a great addition to any backyard landscaping plan, as would a cool thatched umbrella to help shade an area.

4.   Combination Wood/Bamboo
The combination of wood and bamboo is extremely elegant and durable, while the use of a variety of woody materials is beneficial to forestation. Bamboo poles with wooden paneling or wooden stakes with bamboo paneling are a great way to ease bamboo into your backyard décor.

5.     Rolled Bamboo Fence
The most common type of bamboo fence is the rolled bamboo style. Thin shoots of bamboo are tied together using durable steel or reeds of bamboo. It is easy to make, can be treated with Wood Protectant, and lasts a long time. They come in a wide variety of colors, and when treated properly, they are much less likely to fade as much as many of their wooden counterparts.

Each of these bamboo options can come in a variety of colors and shades, as well as varying heights and shapes. In addition to being low maintenance and high durability, the best thing about using bamboo fences instead of, or in addition to traditional hardwood, is that it is a renewable resource that can help our environment for many generations to come. If you have any consideration or concern for the state of forests and rainforests across the globe, consider incorporating more bamboo into your home, yard, and daily life. Your grandchildren will thank you.
